Information Systems Background

In 1999 , the Y2K bug allowed the I.S. Division to implement the first overall conversion from the city’s older McDonald Douglas Network comprised of older terminals to a modern base Windows NT Network designed for use with modern day workstations. This conversion also updated the database engine comprised of all of the city’s records to a fully expandable command line database.

As of now, the I.S. Department was “given the green light” to bring all other aspects of our database system to the most cutting edge technologies. This includes, a new billing system, financial and accounting software, more efficient networking, and integration with the internet. The benefits of this project include, more efficient training of employees, easier workload, and overall improved customer service. This will increase the speed with which we can retrieve data from our database to provide Utility customers the information they request in a more timely manner, as well as the retrieval of information for the internal processing and reporting.

One of the latest projects completed was the City of Belle Glade's first official website. With the help of other departments, and divisions; the City now has another way to branch out to the public by means of the Internet. Future endeavors include online utilities payment, and an information access portal. This means that Commission meetings will be broadcast through the website so that citizens who cant attend meetings in person will be able to watch on the computer. Also, the I.S. Division is working on plans to bring wireless internet to the Glades in the next couple years.
